With 2024 being the 125th anniversary of the Christmas Bird Count, Science Friday did an interview in early January titled “What Scientists Have Learned from 125 Years of Bird Counts.” Ira Flatow talks with Dr. Brooke Bateman, senior director of climate and community science at the National Audubon Society, and Dr. Janet Ng, wildlife biologist at Environment and Climate Change Canada in Regina, Canada.
They share a brief history of the count as well as stories of how the bird count data has been used. They also explain how to participate by joining a count, which covers a 15-mile-diameter circle.
The interview is under 18 minutes, and the above link includes the option of reading the transcript.
